Donald Leonard Webster, August 31, 1934 - January 2, 2021
Your "Flying Postman" Donald will be particularly remembered as your constant, regular Postman until his Retirement in 1998 in the Addingham, Addingham Moorside and Bolton Abbey area where he loved his rural round and would be so well known by many. The GPO originally, temporarily employed him as a Telegram Boy on a motorbike being taken on full time as a Postman when he arrived in Ilkley after the War with his parents, Leonard Denzel Webster and Ivy Webster (nee Carpenter). The family, with his brother Douglas (1936) and sister Yvonne (1939) arrived from the Lincolnshire area in 1948 and Donald settled happily in Ilkley for the remainder of his life. The family originally lived in Throstle Nest in Addingham Moorside, moving to Weston Road, Ashburn Place and finally Rivadale View in Ilkley. Donald spent so much of his leisure time travelling extensively, motorbiking, walking, camping, water-skiing, gliding/flying and dancing and with his close friends and pilots, Ian and John, built, from plans, two light aircraft based at Bagby, North Yorkshire. Donald joined the ATC aged 17 passing his solo flying test in a glider, landing at Selby. At 18, Donald was called for National Service based at Catterick (1951-1953) and he was chosen to attend the Coronation in London. Donald, once settled spent the rest of his time with his family in Ilkley Donald will be lovingly remembered by his son, Andrew, his daughter-in-law, Jody and his grandsons Adam and Daniel. Also his stepsons, Tim and Keith, his long term companion and friend, Christine and her family in Calderdale and Threshfield, his sister-in-law, Pauline and her family, his nieces, nephews and cousins, his friends and his supportive neighbours, his dancing fraternity, his regular families on his postal round and so many walkers on Ilkley's riverside path who spent time with Donald admiring his quirky garden full of hundreds of beautiful begonias. We salute you Donald. You have been loved, admired and respected.
