The first through passenger train from Skipton to Ilkley was booked to leave Skipton at 7.20am on I October 1888, but as so many people turned up, a 'special' was operated before the 7.20. In addition to Midland 0-4-4T's which opened the Skipton - Ilkley line other locomotives used included various 2-4-0 types and no doubt the versatile double frame 0-6-0 freight engines were also to be seen on both goods and passenger duties. No. 86A was one of eight Johnson rebuilds of Matthew Kirtley's Sft 8in 2-4-0s built in 1862-4 and some of these when rebuilt worked over the Skipton - Ilkley and the Skipton - Colne branches. Our photograph shows a spotless No.86A which had been placed on the Duplicate List in June 1890, the date of this picture is between June 1890 and December 1894 when No.86A was withdrawn.
