This interesting photograph shows the contractors special at Bolton Abbey facing towards Embsay. The event took place prior to the opening of the Skipton - Ilkley line in 1888. The train is hauled by one of the Contractors - Mousley & Co., - own Manning Wardle built locomotives. The dumb buffer wagons are interesting - note the temporary seating and the passengers in their Sunday best. The wagon sides are lettered "Mousley, Bourne & Co., Contractors, Ilkley" It is thought that the Contractor had tendered for the job in his own name and may then have decided to take a partner - hence the Bourne. Regrettably we do not know who the passengers were other than they probably were the Contractors, workmen and their families. The wood platform is in evidence along with some of the buildings on the main platform. via the late Thornton Wilson
