Origins of the archive

The Addingham Photo Archive is a collection of photos and scanned documents about the village of Addingham in West Yorkshire. The Addingham Photo Archive is accessible to anyone and you can freely download most images. We have had a lot of very complimentary comments about the Archive and it’s been accessed from places worldwide, even as far away as Australia.

The origins of the Photo Archive go back to a local lady, Hilda Holmes, who was a keen photographer and historian and whose collection of photographs was further enlarged by the well known local historian Kate Mason whose definitive books on the history of the village are available from Addingham Civic Society. This collection of photographs was then taken on by Don Barrett who added many of his own images and first had the idea of an online archive that could be accessed by anyone. It is his pioneering work that created the archive as we know it today and which he and a small team have now developed which is hosted by a local Ilkley company, iBase Media Service Ltd, with an international list of clients – so the Addingham Photo Archive rubs shoulders with Tate Britain, The Science Museum, Woods Hole Oceanographic Centre, and the London Picture Archive amongst many others.

There are about 6.400 images currently available in the Addingham Photo Archive but we actually have over 15,000 in total – we just haven’t edited them all yet. Which is a pity because there is a lot of interest in the history and development of our community and it would be good to make the Archive more accessible and more comprehensive, as well as ensuring that we have accurate information about the images it contains.

If you have a particular interest or are researching an Addingham place, person or subject you may request access to ALL the relevant files. Please contact the group at addinghamheritagegroup@gmail.com. to request access.
